PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a nationalized identity card in India. PAN is an essential requirement for conducting any financial transaction.
The Indian Income Tax Department assigns this 10-digit alphanumeric PAN number to individuals, companies, and HUFs (Hindu Undivided Families) for tax purposes. PAN card holds lifetime validity, you do not need to renew your PAN card.
How to Apply for PAN Card in India
You can apply for a PAN card in two ways –
- Online through NSDL (Protean) /UTIITSL
- Offline
#1. Steps to Apply PAN Card Online Via Protean (Formerly NSDL eGov)
Step #1. Visit the NSDL website to apply for a PAN card.
Step #2. Select the “Application type” based on whether you are an Indian citizen, foreign citizen, or need to make changes/corrections to existing PAN data.
Step #3. Choose your category, such as individual, association of persons, body of individuals, company or more.
Step #4. Fill in all the required details in the PAN card form, including your name, date of birth, email address, and mobile number. Enter captcha and click on the “Submit” button.
Step #5. After submitting the form, you will receive a message indicating the next step. Click on the “Continue with the PAN Application Form” button.
Step #6. You will be redirected to a new page where you need to complete the digital e-KYC process.
Step #7. Select whether you require a physical PAN card or not and provide the last four digits of your Aadhaar number.
Step #8. Proceed to enter your personal details, contact information, and other required information in the form.
Step #9. Enter your area code, AO type, and other relevant details as mentioned in the corresponding tab and click on “next.”
Step #10. Complete the document submission and declaration section of the form including upload your photo, sign and documents.
Step #11. Enter the first 8 digits of your Adhaar card to submit the application. Review your completed form and click “Proceed” if no modifications are necessary.
Step #12. You will be redirected to the payment section where you can make the payment through a demand draft or using net banking, debit card, or credit card.
Step #13. After successful payment, a payment receipt will be generated. Click on “Continue.”
Step #14. Tick the declaration for Aadhaar authentication and select the “Authenticate” option.
Step #15. Proceed by clicking on “Continue with e-KYC.” An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.
Step #16. Enter the OTP and submit the form.
Step #17. Now click on “Continue with e-Sign.” Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number, and an OTP will be sent to the linked mobile number.
Step #18. Enter the OTP and submit the application. You will receive the Acknowledgement slip in PDF format, with your date of birth as the password (in DDMMYYYY format).
Step #19. Within 2-7 working days, you will receive the notification on your registered email ID or mobile number to download the PAN card. You will also receive your physical PAN card within 7-15 working days at your registered address.
#2. Steps to Apply for PAN Card Online Via UTIITSL Portal
Step #1. Visit the UTIITSL PAN card application page and select “PAN Card for Indian Citizen/NRI” under PAN Services.
Step #2. Click on “Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A).”
Step #3. Choose either the “Physical Mode” or “Digital Mode” for the application process. In the Physical Mode, you will have to submit the printed and signed application form at the nearest UTIITSL office.
In the Digital Mode, you can sign the application form using Aadhaar-based e-kyc, e sign mode, or Dsc mode, eliminating the need for a physical copy.
Step #4. Select your applicant category and click on “Submit.”
Step #5. Now you will receive your reference number and save this reference number for future use.
Step #6. Fill in all your personal, document, contact, address, and mandatory details in the application form.
Step #7. Verify the accuracy of the filled-in information and click the “Submit” button. Now you will receive your application number. Take a screenshot of this application number for future use.
Step #8. After verification, proceed to make the payment online. You can choose between available payment gateway options such as BillDesk or PayU India. Payment can be made using net banking, debit card, or credit card.
Step #9. Once the payment is successfully made, you need to fill application number or reference number, date of birth and click on “submit”.
Step #10. Enter the “OTP” which is sent your registered mobile number and click on submit.
Step #11. Review your area code, AO code and address details. Then click on “update.”
Step #12. You will be redirected to the e-sign page and enter your Aadhar details. You will receive an OTP again on your registered mobile number. Enter the same, select the declaration and click on submit.
Step #13. Now you can download or print the receipt of your PAN application acknowledgement number.
#3. Steps For Apply PAN Card Offline
You can visit a nearby TIN NSDL/UTIITSL centre to apply for a PAN card offline.
Step #1. You need to download and print the application form.
Step #2. Fill out the form with accurate information and affix two passport-sized photographs on the designated area.
Step #3. Prepare a demand draft in favor of ‘NSDL – PAN’ payable at Mumbai/UTIITSL to cover the application fee.
Step #4. Attach self-attested photocopies of the required documents along with the filled-out application form.

You can track the status of your PAN card application or correction request with the help of PAN acknowledgement number. Follow these steps:
Step #1. Visit the official link of NSDL to track your PAN card application status.
Step #2. Select the appropriate ‘Application Type’ from the available options.
Step #3. Enter the ‘Acknowledgement Number’ provided to you during the application process.
Step #4. Enter the ‘Captcha Code’ displayed on the screen for verification purposes.
Step #5. Click on the ‘Submit’ button to proceed.
How to Check PAN Card Status Without an Acknowledgement Number
You can track your PAN card status online without an acknowledgement number. Here are steps to follow the NSDL PAN card status by name and date of birth:
Step #1. Visit the official TIN-NSDL portal.
Step #2. Choose “PAN – New/Change Request” under the Application Type section.
Step #3. Select the “Name” section to check PAN card status without acknowledgement number.
Step #4. Enter your Last Name, First Name, Middle Name and Date of Birth.
Step #5. Click on the “Submit” button to get the PAN card status.
How to Track PAN Card Delivery Status
- After submitting your PAN card application, you can easily track the delivery status of your PAN card by visiting the Speed Post tracking portal and entering the consignment number provided to you. This will provide you with the current status of your PAN card delivery.
- Alternatively, you can track the consignment status via SMS. Simply type: ‘POST Track <13-digit article number>’ and send it to either 166 or 51969.
How to Download e-PAN Card Through Acknowledgement Number
Step #1. Visit the official website of NSDL.
Step #2. Click on “Download e-PAN Card.”
Step #3. Enter your acknowledgement number, DOB and captcha.
Step #4. Click on the “Submit” button.
Step #5. Then you can download your e-PAN card.
How To Make Corrections/Updates in PAN Card
If you need to make changes to your existing PAN card, such as updating your name, date of birth, or father’s name, you can apply for it online. The application process is similar to applying for a new PAN card.
Here are steps to follow:
Step #1. You are required to visit the NSDL website.
Step #2. Select the “Changes or corrections in existing PAN data / Reprint of PAN” option under the ‘Application Type’ section.
Step #3. Fill out the required details, ensuring you provide your existing PAN number for making the necessary changes.
Step #4. Fill in the form as per the instructions and make the required payment using options like credit/debit card, demand draft, or net banking. However, there won’t be a requirement to provide the AO code again. On the document details page, you need to select “Proof of PAN.”
Step #5. After the payment is received, the website will generate an acknowledgment receipt. Make sure to print and keep this receipt safe.
Step #6. Once the application is submitted, you will need to mail the supporting documents to NSDL (if you haven’t chosen the e-sign). NSDL will process your application further after acknowledging the receipt of your documents.
If you choose modes other than the Aadhaar-driven online process, ensure that the documents you upload or send support the specific change or correction you have requested for your PAN card.
How to Download Duplicate PAN Card/Request to Reprint of PAN Card
Step #1. Visit the official website of NSDL.
Step #2. Click on “Reprint of PAN Card.”
Step #3. Fill the required details including PAN number, Aadhar number, DOB.
Step #4. Accept the declaration and click on the “Submit” button.
Documents Required for Applying a PAN Card

Proof of Identity
A. Photocopy of any of the following documents having the applicant’s name as mentioned in the application:

- Arm’s license
- Photo ID card issued by the Central/State government or Public Sector Undertaking

Important Notes
- In case of a minor applicant, the proof of identity and address of parents/guardians is accepted as the proof of identity and address for the minor applicant.
- In case of HUFs, an affidavit by the karta of the HUF stating the name, father’s name and address of all the coparceners on the date of application and copy of any of the above documents in the name of Karta of HUF is accepted as a proof of identity, address and date of birth.
- An Indian citizen residing outside India, latest copy of bank account statement in country of residence or copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statements (not more than three months old) shall be the proof of address.
- In case the communication address is an office address, proof of office address has to be submitted along with proof of residence address.
Proof of Date of Birth
A. Photocopy of any of the following documents bearing the name, date, month and year of birth of the applicant as mentioned in the application:
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID card
- Driving License
- Passport
- Matriculation certificate or Mark sheet of recognized board
- Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or any office authorized to issue a birth certificate by the Registrar of Birth and Deaths or the Indian Consulate
- Photo identity card issued by the Central Government or State Government or Central Public Sector Undertaking or State Public Sector Undertaking
- Domicile certificate issued by the government
- Central Government Health Service Scheme photo card or Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
- Pension Payment Order (PPO)
- Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage
- An affidavit obtained in lieu of date of birth certificate
